Oct. 16th, 2025 08:05 pmI have been visiting my hospitalized friend at lunchtime this week. Yesterday she scared me. She did not know where she was. She thought she was in a bus station. She recognized me but a lot of her conversation made no sense. I thought she had radiation treatments and I saw a mostly empty bottle of colonoscopy prep on her bed tray and the bed tray was pushed away from the bed. I called the nurses station. I introduced myself as her niece and made sure my hospital badge could be seen. The nurse said she wasn't like that 20 minutes ago. The nurse had a doc paged.
The Doctor came and was concerned. I introduced myself again and described the conversation I had with my friend. The Doc talked to her and also checked for stroke symptoms. The took ver vitals and they were normal. A blood test was ordered as well as a glucose level. The doctor thought that my friend was delirious from all the pain killers. She is on morphine and before they transported her for her radiation she had 3 oxycontin pills. The doctor explained that usually she was a tad delirious at night, but since they prepped her for a colonscopy the drugs hit her harder. Since I claimed to be family the doctor said the plan was to give her radiation for 2 more days then it would be off to rehab for therapy to get her arm working so a walker can be used. Then home.
I called her roommate and told her to get ahold of the healthcare proxy. Friend is not capable of making any decisions in this state.
Today I go in and my friend thought she was in an elevator. She tried to disconnect her catheter and her oxygen. She made less sense. She went to take a sip of water with her good hand and dumped it all over herself. I called the nurses station for help. I called roommate again to say that the healthcare proxy needs to ask questions. Someone needs to come in to discuss rehab ...and make sure the rehab is close to Boston so people can visit and advocate for her. I know that if she is too far away I cannot go and see her.
It is sad when people have no family. Makes me wonder what will happen to me.

How long has she been in the hospital? It could also be lack of sleep, they wake you up constantly, and that could be affecting her too.
So glad you are there to advocate for her.

Date: 2025-10-19 10:44 am (UTC)this. but i'm so glad she's doing better/clearer. hospital stays are no joke when you don't have an advocate and are drugged up. :(
