Sep. 13th, 2024 10:49 pmThey called an ambulance for my 95 year old aunt today. It seems that she has not slept since last Saturday night and at night she is off the wall mentally. No one in the house has slept. Today she fell asleep in her chair and could not be woken up. She would talk incoherently but would not fully wake up or lift her head or open her eyes.
1o hours in the ER and they ran tests. All of her body functions are fine. She is in good health. No UTI or anything. They think it is a combination of dementia, sundowners, dehydration, wrong medication, and sleep deprivation. The plan is to keep her and try and find a balance of medications to help.
I'm a bit sad as when I have seen her she is lucid and we have conversations. We were doing word search puzzles on Saturday and we talked about making soup.
I texted the lead cousin to say that I know she is in the ER and would she like up to bring her anything to eat or drink? This hospital is not the big Boston hospital I work at so there isn't really anywhere to eat. She said she was okay. She is going to stay until her Mom is placed in a room. That may be tomorrow. WE can bring her breakfast. My aunt has not woken up.

Date: 2024-09-15 10:43 am (UTC)I hope they can get her straightened out.
Delirium on top of everything else is hard to clear up. :(
We see it all too often in the ICU.
Hugs, Jon

Date: 2024-09-15 02:07 pm (UTC)Part of me thinks the problem is that they put them on a new med and dont even wait 24 hours to send them home. They never said anything about side effects to the cousins and the cousins believe that the doctor's know everything so they wont look up any possible adverse reactions.
They are also now checking for blood clots that could be causing her legs to hold fluid. They were told that you can get clots after a major fall. My thought is that the fall happened 6 weeks ago shouldn't they have checked earlier? Oh well.

Is this the hospital of choice or necessity? :o
