May. 7th, 2024 09:38 pmI have a desire to be in salt water. More than wade. I'd say dive, but I swim like a brick. If I could swim I'd say I was a Selkie.
The new guy started at work. The other's were afraid he was too corporate. For the 5 minutes I met him I thought he was nervous. I also thought the job could use a bit of professional.
They sat him next to me as the person training him is out until Friday. He is very unprofessional. Never shuts up. In one day it sounded like he has quit over 40 jobs in the last 10 years. He says everyone he worked for was juiced. I think he means that they had connections so he had to quit because he would never get ahead. He repeated this for 4 hours. He was the best at everything and smarter than everyone. Yet he forgot what building we were in and was 25 minutes late for work his first day/. I told myself I would be kind. Perhaps he has a form of Autism. When it went quiet it was because he fell asleep. I let him sleep. He watched me eat and kept telling me that Diet Pepsi was bad for me...like 40 times. Yes. I. Know. I shut him down twice. Once when he wanted to talk about his bowel obstruction. The other time was politics. He asked if I liked the Massachusetts Governor. I said I like some things she is doing but not all the things. I vote Independent and I am not comfortable getting beyond that with politics.
He tried to give the Boss a $50 gift card as a thank you for hiring him. She could not take it as there are rules against that. Anyone who worked corporate would know that. He even claims to have worked at the bank I worked at while I was there.
He asked me how long my probation period was. I panicked a bit because I didn't know I had one... I didn't say that. I said that my job is very different than the Member Services role that he was hired for. Im a bookkeeper. We work side by side but really not with each other. You don't report to me and I don't report to you. I can help you with lunch and the different things that are offered by the hospital, but most other things you will need to ask the Service reps or the boss because I don't know the system you use.
I then went into the bosses office and asked about my probation period. She asked me where I got that from. I said the new hire wanted to talk about MY probation period as he has 6 months. She made a face. She said that was the standard hospital period. She had told him in case she needed to use it. He was the best qualified person she had apply for the job (Ummmm.... I would have hired a high school grad that could not afford college) Well, if you need to use that on me then just let me go before my Birthday so I can enjoy August. Funny thing is that earlier in the day I had asked for a 90 day review and she had never done one before). She asked what I told him. I repeated what I had said. She asked if he was bothering me. Perhaps it's just first day jitters.
I am thinking I need to take some accounting/bookkeep classes on my own. She is not training me. I can't fill out the month end audits if I don't know where the data is or how to read it. I see that Lynda.com has been bought by Linked In.
Today I get an email from the boss that her mother is going back into the hospital by ambulance as she can't breathe. She will be in tomorrow. Sounds like her Mother has congestive heart failure to me (like my Dad). The boss will then be on vacation next week. So much for learning Month end reporting.

yeah might be a spectrum thing
maybe "interviewed at but never hired" to them equals "worked for". it'll be really tough to determine if he's using all the failures or non acceptance as "work experience" but it's not intentionally misleading maybe really has no clue the implications.
Anyway
I'm thinking you should try to get bookkeeping training on your own if you're able to do it. that so called "self starter" thing I guess. but also just getting yourself some background to help you do the job better.
