I need to learn to Navigate the new boss.

At 2 PM Friday she sends me a touch base email and asked how the work load was going. I said that I can finish the daily tasks fairly early. I am trying to come up with new spreadsheets that are more meaningful since on Tuesday we both thought the old ones didn't cut it. I also was working on paying invoices and I wondered about the mail since anything I did after 9 AM Friday would not be mailed out until Tuesday. The coworker being groomed as a supervisor mentioned a big project that involved research and I thought I could help.

I get back an email typed in red and capital letters : YOU ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT WORK ON THAT PROJECT. I want you to work on bookkeeping functions. There are enough people to work on that.

Sigh. Then train me.

I picked up a bookkeeper book and will go through it. Then I have to figure out how to ask her to train me, but make it look like it is all her idea.

My thought is that I need to do the daily stuff (and I do) then learn the monthly reports, the the quarterly reports, then learn what is needed for audits, and finally year end reporting. It's not rocket science , but if I can't see the reports I can't figure out how to do them. Oi.

It's a shame...if she would just spend a few consecutive days with me I know I can happily do what she needs. Train me then she never has to come back in. I'm cool with that.

Part of it may be that she is used to writing to people who are ESL and 20 years younger than me (and her). Still not cool... and not professional.

I would have been so tempted to respond back to her by saying, I hear you LOUD AND CLEAR.

i think what bugs me is that this feels very 'damned if you do, damned if you don't'. she seemed cool with how quick you were picking up on stuff and thought she could just _take off_, which was clearly premature. then she decided it was easiest to blame you for not being able to work alone, which is NOT cool. you clearly CAN do some of the stuff quickly, so you ask if you can help the people who ARE THERE working, and she freaks out (IMHO) because it makes her look bad. which... WTF, lady? you should be encouraging people to WANT to work. also, the red letters? drama queen, much?

I think she is too used to dealing with people who are young enough to be her (and my) kids...and are ESL. Still not cool.

I think you are right about her freaking out.

My young, varied ethnic coworkers probably think that this is just how all almost 60 year old white women act.


Hey, at least she hasn't tried to hit me with anything yet, like at the pen place.
