Mar. 2nd, 2024 07:30 pmThis week was my first full week of work. 3 Days the commute home was an hour...great. Two days it was 2 hours. Fixing dinner for Dad when I get home is tiring... the think is that I really don't like left overs, or reheats unless it's a stew or soup..or left over Chinese Food to pizza. I am looking forward to grilling outside.
The boss asked me how things were going and I said I just needed to get used to the commute. She was concerned as a 2 hour commute could make people not want to stay. True, but its mostly to due with the trains and they should be better next year. She is willing to let me shift my hours to 6:30 AM to 3:00 once I am trained because I do not work with the customers/members. I thanked her for that and I will see how things go. Right now I want to learn what I do and build a relationship with the team. If I leave earlier I feel I will miss out on building a relationship. And I did not say that there isn't a shuttle at 3. It's 2:30 and then 3:35. After the #:35 one they come every 20 minutes. As long as I can get out to meet that bus by 3:35. The stop is in front of the hospital.
The job isn't too hard. It's what I did at Santander. I just have to learn the accounts. She isn't thrilled that they guy who trained me did it like paint by numbers, but he only had 8 days with me so I wasn't surprised. She wants to train me so I know "WHY" I do what I do. That will be good. I enjoy working with her even though she is pretty rabid fire with things right at 7 AM. I like to be fully caffeinated and ease into my day with at least 15 minutes of quiet time at my desk. My quest is to get a key. I am there early but have to wait in the hospital lobby until someone comes in with a key.
Once the boss left Friday (at noon) the staff were chatting. They all like food and we had nice conversations about restaurants and cooking. The boss put a TV in the office for the customers to look at in case they have to wait. I suggested me put on The Food Network ;-) The women are pretty crafty too. Rudi, the only guy, has an easy going personality and gets along well with women. He has 6 sisters.
I am disappointed about the PTO. I can't have my birthday off this year, because the boss is off and she is my back up. We also have to earn out days off...including the holidays. This is because we are technically hospital employees and they work holidays. The earned time is about 8.6 hours every 2 week pay period. So since there are 2 bank holidays (because we are still a bank) in January the time you earn that month mostly goes towards New Years Day and MLK day. I think you just get 1.2 hours of PTO time. I'll figure it out better once I work a full Month. March does not have any holidays in it so I can see. I think I get 14.8 PTO days a year. It's a good think that my goal is to save for a kitchen redo instead of traveling.

Date: 2024-03-03 07:48 am (UTC)It's very maddening here because the department of nursing has ruled that we are not allowed to use PTO on weekends. So I am not allowed to even have a full two week period off. The most time I can take off at one time is 12 days because I have to come back for me weekend. 42 years and that's how I am treated.
ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry for complaining here. :(
HUGS, Jon

Date: 2024-03-03 12:12 pm (UTC)For me to have to earn the holidays I should be able to pick and choose. I wouldn't take off MLK and Presidents day because its cold and I just sit in the house.

Date: 2024-03-03 04:22 pm (UTC)New Years
Memorial Day
July 4th
Labor Day
Thanksgiving
Christmas
The biggest laugh is Labor Day.
A day that is supposed to celebrate the workers.
Who is the only one guaranteed to have the day off? Management.
The rest of us only get it off every other year.
Well, that's those of us that work 8 hour shifts. We have to work every other holiday.
The people, mostly nurses, that work 12 hour shifts only have to work 2 of the 6 holidays.
More labor bigotry. :o

Date: 2024-03-03 01:16 pm (UTC)That's so odd that you have to earn your holiday days off. I mean, what are they going to do, make you work a holiday (when they are closed) if you don't have the accrued PTO? So strange. I am sure it works out okay, otherwise they probably wouldn't keep many people, but sheesh.
I wonder if you mentioned the shuttle schedule, she may let you leave at 2:30? Of course that'd mean coming in even earlier. And since you mention needing to wait to have someone open the door, would 6:30 arrival even make sense? I mean, she'd pretty much have to provide you a key if you did those hours. Hope you get it figured out.
