Jan. 25th, 2024 10:56 amI have been awol for a few days. That dry cough turned into something almost about an hour after my interview Tuesday and left me a zombie yesterday. Today I am up and about. I had been testing for Covid since the first wheeze but not positive so all is good... and I need to get more tests.
Tuesday's interview was at 10AM. I left here with plenty of time to navigate the redline and the bus and was almost an hour early. I know the area from Dad's hospital stay so I went to a bagel place and had breakfast. Not bad.
I make my way into the cardiology building and go t the cafeteria. To the left is a tiny sign saying Alpha Credit Union and a stand alone not branded ATM. In the doorway was Joette, the CEO. Zoom interviews are great so that you know who you are looking for when you finally meet in person.
The branch/office itself is interesting. Tiny. Tiny. Tiny. The ladies rooms at the bank were bigger. The CEO's office was like a coset. In order to make it look more spacious the eco put up a 32 in monitor on the wall and there was a slide show of outside spaces..beaches, canyons, etc. Does it bother me. No.
The interview was really casual. It all sounds like things I did for the bank. She mentions being detailed for audit trails and that is so who I am. I asked about growth and she said it was there if I wanted it. She asked what I was interested in. I said that first I wanted to learn and be good at the job hired, but I would also like to learn about how a small credit union runs and see where that takes me. She actually said that she only has 10 years left so I think she is looking for a back up and replacement for her. She thinks I am younger...the red hair and chubby face make me look younger... we shall see. My goal is to get paid and get back to my art. I didn't tell her that.
I sat with the guy who is leaving. He is young, maybe 28. He's moving to Germany with his family so that's why there is a position open. The one who wanted to work remote actually left in the fall. Another person left earlier because she would not be vaccinated against covid. The staff are technically employees of a hospital so vaccination is mandatory.
The job looks like things have done before. Just on a different system. I know I can do it if I am trained. I can do almost anything if trained.
They also had me sit with the 2 tellers...who are 3 ft away from where my desk would be. They were both so nice and normal. A younger guy was actually a teller at Santander. I asked if they took the trains in. Yes...and they told me the best way to get around. There are actually shuttles across the city of Boston that will take medical staff to the hospital area and all you need to do is show your badge. That makes me feel good as there is a shuttle at the train station I stop away from my home station, and it would be safer for me to use because it's only for medical staff. The public busses I would have to take stop in some of the most dangerous parts of Boston.
I do know that in order to succeed here there are parts of my brain that I need to ignore. Like I asked abut there mortgages and loans...I always wanted to learn about mortgages. I asked if their undressing was outsourced (I wanted to be an underwriter once upon a time) The CEO does the underwriting. And they only have one mortgage and it's hers. Ummm...umm... that's a risk. I know that because my cousin is a vice president of the mortgage department of an affluent a co op and it was illegal for her to underwrite her own mortgage so they had to pay fora consultant underwriter so she could get a mortgage through her own bank. So... if I am not up for an audit I just have to put me knowledge away. And I happily found out that Credit Unions do not go through SOX audits so I would never have to sign any federal audit papers.
I submitted my references and THANK YOU to those people. I used my Dad's Boss as one reference as I did moving work for her and I keep her star employee alive. She called me this morning and read me everything they asked in the survey. Yeah. So THANK YOU.
I am not sure howling the onboarding will take. I need a physical and a background check. I was hoping to start February 5th so I could sit with the guy leaving. I don't understand how I will train with the CEO when she is only in once week and they don't use Skype or zoom or teams in the office. That is my only worry.
If I can't start then I'd like to start after Presidents day so I don't have to cancel a dr appointment for my Dad on Feb 16.
I do need to still apply for jobs so I can keep my unemployment. I also need to make sure they are going to offer me what I asked for. Less and I can't do it. My property taxes went up 2 grand a year and this is a pay cut so I can't go too low for a bank job. I would have done it for the senior center as I want to go into teaching arts and crafts to seniors when I am 65.
