Jan. 18th, 2024 09:36 am20 minutes before my 9 AM interview I get an email from the person interviewing me saying she had to go to the ER because she thinks she has appendicitis. She apologized profusely and felt really bad. She included a woman on her team in case I hd any questions. She would get back to me s soon as she could.
I responded with No worries. Take care of yourself first. I am flexible. Just let me know when you can when you can meet or if you would like someone on your staff to meet with me.
I am a bit flustered and disappointed. And it's too cold for me to just go out and walk it off at the beach (it's 20F/ -6.667 C. Nothing on the person... Hell. If she thinks she has appendicitis she is in pain. Yes, I looked it up. The treatment is most often surgery...and a 3 week recovery time.
While this commute wouldn't be optimal it would have got me back in town. Her emails lead me to believe this person has integrity and human and that s important to me. But I can't just wait if I have no clue just how close I am in the running.
This is also why it is important to have a business continuity plan.

Date: 2024-01-18 05:57 pm (UTC)it got me thinking of my own awkward experiences:
The job I took after the auction house, at the sports & concert ticket art shop, my first day on the job, the guy I was basically replacing got into a car accident at the end of the street, he was also working as an Uber/Lyft driver at the time. So, I'm there like 10 mins early, and he doesn't show up
It was not immediately known if he or the other car invoived had been injured or not, as he wasn't responding to nor had made any calls. (and granted, getting emergency vehicles on site is first priority)
So, when he did show up the next day and was showing me the ropes (shipping) he was understandably a bit distracted.
The first day at the auction house a few years before that, I got a low tire pressure light coming back from Boston, and thought it was just a small leak. Nope, the morning of the first day the tire was totally flat. By some miracle, the AAA driver came by in like 10 minutes and knew what the F he was doing since the car was parked on a hill and he jacked it up at an angle and I was on my way within minutes, and still somehow was able to get to work like 10 mins early, before the doors were unlocked.
The interview at the sign shop the supervisor-manager I met had broken his ankle or leg in a skiing accident a few days before, and he apparently had been having a lot of trouble getting used to using the crutches, and kept bumping into things, and was in an understandably sour mood that day. I thought I was pissing him off the whole time. Turned out we're both Bruins/hockey fans so we got along OK, although I hardly saw him when I actually started working there. (he also had moved to the Cape so he was driving like 2 hours to get to work, I thought he was nuts)
An interview at a Temp Agency I came across a big car crash and then a water main break (?), so had to take the looooong way around to try and find the office....As I initially parked in front of the wrong building, as it was one of those huge industrial/business parks. I seem to remember I had to call them to make sure I was in the right place, that was awkward.
The first job right after college where my Dad had a R&D lab, but he had to work most of the week in the main factory in Chelsea, so anyway I get to this huge industrial park and I almost went into the wrong back entrance. I was thinking I should go to the front door, but (they) said don't bother, it's usually locked and no one goes to the front door anyway, since it's only 3 guys who worked there.
