I did not get to hike the Blue Hills on Thursday. It was a fabulous day for a hike. A stunning sky and warm for October temps. The reservation/park is across the highway from my my Sister and Sis in law stay so we couldn't really get lost. But...there is always a but...
We drive in and see several trails. Many of them had families with small kids so the trail would have been easy. We passed a body of water and they asked what it was. I told them it was a reservoir. Nothing much as it is man made and encased in rock and cement. It was also restricted for a bit after 9/11 as people thought that terrorists would poison it. It may be still restricted. I don't know really know. If you want to walk around a pretty reservoir we should take a trip to the Quabin. You can hike there. Its nice.
We drive for a bit. I thought they were looking for a trail. Then we go back to the reservoir. My sis in law says she wants to see if there is a high point behind the reservoir. There is a paved road with an open gate. I say that there is nothing up there. Its a water treatment type area. Almost industrial. She still drives up. I note the signs say to report any unusual behavior. I joked "Like Us". There was a person in there but far away. We get to the end of the road, which was just a very long driveway and, like I said, there is nothing there. Just gravel and weeds. She walked around.
After 20 minutes I suggested we go to the trail where we saw the families. We drive the gate and it is locked. We cant get out. Any gaps in the fencing have huge rocks or a deep ditch so the car could not pass. This is what happens when you go into the only industrial part of a nature reserve...sigh
I crawled under the gate and called the number on the sign about unusual activity. I made sis in law talk to the person as this was her fault. There was a half hour conversation about how we ended up there and that there are NO no trespassing signs. The said that they would try to locate the worker that just left and call back. 30 minutes later we get a call saying they cannot find the worker, but they see us on camera. We waved. Someone would call us back. 30 minutes later someone called to let us know that if we saw the state police that they would be told not to arrest us for trespassing. Great. And that they had to call the parks department for the key. They didnt know how long we would be there. Great. An hour later a man came and opened the gate. We apologized. He had driven from Chelsea, which is North of Boston and we were an hour south of Boston. I expected a lecture, or a ticket, but the guy was very relaxed about the whole thing. He said it was really the worker's fault as they are supposed to close the gate behind themselves when they enter.
So after waiting all that time just with reach of a pretty place they had to find a rest room and then we went home. I took one nice picture of a pond by the restroom.
I think I need to find some hiking buddies here and go explore The Blue Hills. Maybe there is a meet up group of something.
