Last week I got a quote from the house painter.

It was really good. I had been told around 10 grand. OMG.

His quote was much lower. And with me taking 1/2 from Dad's account I can still buy my new computer. I really think he gave me a friends and family discount. He is DQ's nephew. I have known him since he was a year old.

I wanted him to do the job because I know that being neat and clean is his OCD. I have never met a painter that didn't get some paint on them. I thought it would be good since the deck is still rather new.

He power washed the house with bleach on Saturday. I was relieved that there were no flying shingles.

He should be here later in the week to start.

Hope it goes well. The house will look fresh and clean once done. What colour are you having?

I'm sure it will look good anyway. Spruce green will be nice if you get to do that next time.

"I have never met a painter that didn't get some paint on them."

that reminded me of an encounter.I had with a man from Germany who saw me at a 1600's period printing demo.

I don't remember the whole conversation but he saw me use the edge of my apron to wipe the plate and my (inky) fingers and he made a comment
about how in Germany, the mark of a really good printer was they had no ink on their apron....Or was it a car mechanic, like I said I forget.

I thought he was going to say "not afraid to get his hands dirty", which I'd figure would be the "American" response, so wasn't expecting "no ink on the apron". I also thought of Military uniforms of the 18th and 19th centuries that were stark white (like Austria in the 1850s) and they chose that because it forced the soldiers to constantly clean their uniforms of dirt and gunpowder and be sparkly and presentable, or at least that was the reasoning.

Practical? Probably. Realistic? No.

But either way, a House Painter that doesn't want to make a horrible mess of themselves or the surrounding area is totally worth the expense and that should be pretty standard. A little paint on clothing? Meh, no big deal. Finding spatter all over everything for the next 2 years? Not Cool.

Yay for a good quote!! I was amazed at the one I got for my new driveway. I have also debated buying/renting a power washer, because my siding really needs it. ;-)

Finding a painter who does a neat job is HUGE. I have so much paint on hinges and handles in my apartment from painters who didn't tape things off when they should have.
