Yesterday was Dad's work Christmas party. I took the day off. Since it was a lunch I thought we would head in around 10:30 or 11. No, he had a cousin drive us in at 8:30. He has no consideration for my time. I am tired of it.

Going into work was a bit emotional. We go up to his shop in an old fashioned freight elevator that works with a chain. A young man met us in the elevator to work it since Da shouldn't open the doors with teh chain and I haven't a clue how it works. We get to the shop and the doors open and the whole shop is there cheering and clapping that my Dad was there. They even had a Birthday cake for him since he was in the hospital for his Birthday. He was so happy he started to cry. I have only seen him cry once when my Mom left us.

He puttered around and we ate. I tried to make him healthy choices of chinese food...hard to do..but he went back for seconds and maybe a third. He had cake too. Not a great hearty healthy day, but I knew that. He was happy to be puttering. He helped someone wire a plug to a machine. All and work nothing that required strength. He told the guys that the boss hired to move things how to bolt 2 of the machine to a pallet and use a pallet jack to move them. They young guys were trying to lick them up. He was very happy.

The good thing for me was that I could meet and talk with the Boss's 65 year old brother. He also has a defibrillator pace maker combo. He got his at 49. Had a 100% blockage. The only that saved his was that he was in the hospital visiting someone when he went down.

I said that we really haven't had any conversations with the medical people yet so all I know is what I am reading on line...and that can be bad. He asked what Dads Ejection fraction was and I said 20% as of Dec 1. He told me his was only 30%. That made me feel better. I asked if he followed a strict no or low sodium diet. He said that some people do, but he doesn't. So Dad shouldn't drop dead after filling his face with Chinese food. He said no, but it is best to eat healthy more than not.

I asked if he thought any of the shop machines had a strong enough electrical field to affect the sensor in the defibrillator. He said that he did not have any issues since he has been helping his sister with things since my Dad has been out on disability.

He said that the best thing I could do is advocate for Dad. The med people will just want him to sit on a sofa all day You need to push to get his meds right so he can do more than that. He said that Dad should be okay to supervise..as long as he doesn't lift anything or push himself. He should get stronger and more confident.

At 2 one of his coworkers gave up a ride home. Turns out she lives 3 blocks away from us. She drove like a demon...so fast. She speaks very little English but listened to rap music. Not what I was expecting.

Dad wants to go back Monday. He wants to supervise the loading of more machines. I am going with him to make sure he doesnt try anything stupid. I figure I'd let him do this because then he is in until Jan 11th. That is when his stress test is. Im hoping he passes she he can get the okay to drive.

I know that I will have to deal with the medical stuff... but I want him to find his new normal so I can get a life back for a bit.

That was really great that you got to talk to that guy.
First hand experience counts for so much. :)
Super sweet of them to celebrate his birthday like that. :)

Sounds like a good time that maybe helped mellow Dad out a bit? :)
BTW pretty terrifying that the guy only survived because he collapsed in a hospital!! :\

I'm glad to read this went better than you were expecting.

half-serious: you think about learning the ropes and working there, taking over from him? It might beat that other annoyingly headachy job....

I'm so glad you got the chance to talk to someone who has also had similar heart issues to your dad. I hope it helps a bit with the anxiety.
