The quote for the electrician to update the kitchen was over $3000.00. FOR A SMALL KITCHEN. I can't do that. I was expecting about $1500.00

The contractor cousin said he would ask if we could just do the bare minimum and not separate the kitchen circuit from the living room...my Mom could not use a space heater and the microwave at the same time. Not sure what to do if we can't. No dishwasher in a new kitchen is not good for resale or renting.

And I am committed to doing something since the wall is pretty much down. GGGGRRRRR....

Not that I want to cheat the electrician. I know his work is good and having things RIGHT is important, but without a quote from the plumber I don't know how much anything will cost. I expected the plumber to be the most. The off the cuff quote I was given was just about what I had.

Yikes! That sucks. =(

But if you were blowing fuses, it means there's probably a lot of work that needs to be done to upgrade things. People use a lot more electronic stuff nowadays, depending on how old your house it, it might need a lot of rewiring to handle the load. And you want it done right, so you don't end up with an electrical fire.

We've had quite a lot to do to the electrics here but that's crazy expensive!

maybe get a couple more quotes? if even just to have some leverage to bargain, or to reassure yourself that the quote isn't horribly outrageous?

Kitchens are such a cost to re-do. Even at our old house in 1992, we planned for $5,000 and spent $10,000. Of course that was all new cupboards and floor.
