and I found out from the contractor cousin's wife that the contractor is up in Vermont... and may be there all summer....

What that means for me is that he will only be able to finish my house on the weekends... so it may be longer than I expected...

Actually I am refusing to pay anything at this point. Not until I get the goods.... and I am not home the weekends, Dad is, and Dad cannot pay him so it will be at my leisure. They should have called the day after they measured.

I'm sorry, this whole thing is absurd. Nobody has given you any concrete figures, so you don't know who to pay and how much, so of course the guy isn't going to do any work for you.

There needs to be a contract in place with an end date for the project, and you need to have a price list of goods and services. I hate seeing you get strung along like this, all because "well, they're family." C'mon, hon, stand up for yourself. I wish no demolition (by ANYBODY, including your father, who clearly has NO idea what he's doing and is therefore a danger to himself and to the house) had been done until you had at least a pretty solid idea of what was going to happen. You're going to be stuck without a kitchen for six months and then wind up having to pay someone else a lot more money to fix these mistakes.

All the carpentry and electrical work are done. The electric has been inspected. The only piece of finish work is that the door needs to be planed down to clear the threshold better. I am just waiting on the countertop...and the counter guy has my sink to cut the counter to it. Once that is here I need the plumber to hook up the sink and disposal. The kitchen itself is enclosed.

I gave a deadline for the new order. If I don't get it I keep my 4 to 6 grand and buy a counter somewhere else and hire another plumber.

Generally the cousin does really good work. The materials I picked were things that he put into his Sisters' house so I know that they are good quality. He did a roof for us, and in this house the eves and gutters and was done in the projected time frame. The thing with the roof stuff is that the just bought the goods and did the work. I think he does not have good communications with the third party people he uses. While I may not use him again for a kitchen I think I would still use him to build a deck or porch as it is just lumber and his own labor.

The good thing is that I have a full kitchen in my apartment. What is driving me nuts is that I can't get a final tally and I have to stop my Dad from spending his portion and I am afraid to spend anything in my account. I need an end bill so I can make plans and not be afraid to spend. I have no one to borrow from if this goes over budget
