This week I needed to finish the month end reports. I asked my back up to do her part. We would go over it today. She called in sick because the baby had pink eye and she has not been bringing home her lap top...like we do for business continuity...or so you can work from at home...

... so instead of working on my reports I have to do all her daily work first. I was not amused.

Last week I also asked her about 4 cases that she was supposed to have done while I was to on vacation... she said she would do them Friday... She did not. I asked her4 times last week. Because she is out the rest of the week I now have to start the research from scratch...

I went the boss. I told her I was tired of being lied to and treated like a chump. The boss says she understood that my back up was not pulling her weight and that mid year reviews were coming. I was mad. I asked how slapping this person's hand in a review would HELP ME NOW. I need a proper back up. I can't do EVERYTHING. I can't start an hour early everyday and work through lunch while other people do shit.

Later I am struggling to get things done. I here the bosses talk about the month end reports as the boss I like is taking Friday off and needs to sign them on Thursday. The boss I spoke to earlier said no problem. Nice to involve me in the conversation. So one day gets chopped off my work time... and I still have to cover the back up's work this week. Then they joke about the hockey team and one boss says she can't watch the game because she gets up at 4 AM. The boss I like asks if she would watch the game if he let her work from at home on Thursday. She says "DONE" Then she tells me I have to have the reports done before Wednesday...tomorrow preferred. I asked her if she even took me serious earlier... and that I can't promise I can rush something just so she can watch a hockey game. How unfair.

I know it goes against the grain but maybe you should work sensible hours at a sensible pace and if stuff doesn't get done in time then that's a problem for your bosses and not you. Those who let themselves be taken for granted are the ones put upon the most. I wouldn't play that game with them, to be honest. Why wear yourself out and be unhappy for a job? The job will still be there after you have gone and they would have to manage wouldn't they?

This.

Tell them you are taking your lunch break regardless- OUT of the office. That's the law here as I'm pretty certain it is here!

You want all this done sooner than one person can reasonably do it? Hire some more help.

That is absolutely OUTRAGEOUS! I'd be furious.

Honestly, I think the thing to do would be to turn them in on Friday. And when someone throws a fit about it say, "If you were on Vacation, then your backup should have covered your work. Oh, you don't have a backup? Now you know how I feel when I take time off and nobody does my work while I'm gone. How do you like it? You don't, neither do I. How can we solve that problem?"

Because you will have your reports done ON TIME, it's the manager who aren't in the office who are missing doing their work, not you. No one should reasonably be expected to get yelled at for doing their work by when it was scheduled (and if they yell at you for not being EARLY, tell them that is not a reasonable thing to be upset about, especially when you are doing two people's worth of work for a SINGLE SALARY.)

It doesn't make sense to spend so much time worrying about cover other people's ass when they don't return the favor.

Hells, yeah!

But- you have my deep sympathy. Company cultures can get SUPER toxic.
