I have been having more issues with my back up. Last week I said that she would have to do part of the month end reports...to learn it in case I was out. What I gave her should have taken an hour. I told her to tell me when she finished so I could check her work. We have a deadline and I wantedenverythong by Friday. This gave her 6 days to do it. There was also another report that she had to do that only takes 2 hours to do. This also had to be done Friday.

Friday she calls saying that she is sick and working from at home.

I sent an email asking for the reports. No response.

I see that some were done...completed on the Wednesday. She never said she did the. Sigh. Okay so I print them off and sign them.

The other report s not there. I asked her if she was working on it. No response. I copied my boss. No word.

Today she come in and I can see that she is just starting that report... Leave her be. I am expecting the boss to ask for it. She does not. At 11 AM I go to the file and see that the report is there. She never acknowledged my email. Never told me that she finish. Never talked to me at all about any of the work.

I got mad. I sent an email to the boss asking to see her for a minute away from my desk area. I printed off the report. I showed it to the boss saying I was upset that this had been in the computer folder since 9 AM and my coworker didn't have the courtesy to tell me. She never responded to my emails on Friday and then she tells me she finished the other reports on Wednesday but could not be bothered to tell me or even give them to me, but when I said I printed them out and signed them she pulled out copies from her desk and said ...og I guess I forgot you. I AM TIRED OF THIS.

The boss said she was on the same page as I was and did I see that the report was wrong. Ummm...no. I didn't check her work on the last report because she is the expert on it. I only just saw it why should I have to check it.

I told the boss that I was frustrated but willing to let things go this week. The girl graduates on Friday and so probably has a lot on her brain...but this shit is rude. I am not putting up with it in June. I have been nice. I have tried to be encouraging. I am being treated like a chump. I am busting my ass while this person does her homework and the woman next to me looks at kitties on the internet all day. I am the expert one one function and no one else in North America knows it... If I keep being treated like a chump I will walk. And if she doesn't start communicating with me properly I won't be all please and thank you and keep reminding... it will the WTF are you doing! You (the boss) need to tell her she is part of the team or I will.

The boss thinks she is going to leave. I agreed, but just because you get a diploma doesn't mean the hand you a job with it... She could be here until Christmas...and frankly I am not putting up with this treatment until then. I cover her desk overtime her kid is sick, all through her pregnancy when she was sick, when her baby is sick, and through her Mom's passing away... and give up planned vacation days because she couldn't tell me when she was graduating. I want a reprimand and I want back up whenI am out... I am sick of coming in from medical things and pto to find everything f'd up.

The boss claims she didn't know how to handle this and that she would go to her boss... Umm...why? I said that she needs to ride the coworker's ass... not let her do nothing all day. You fill her day up with shit work not let her do her college work all day and loot at real estate websites. The dead weight gets to collect paychecks while your expert wants to walk out...and you have no one trained to do my work.

The boss said for me not to take her treatment of me personally. I said I don't. What I take personally is you allowing this to go on. I have brought this issue to your attention since the day you hired her.

Grrr...

Just as I was getting ready to leave the coworker says that the report washout on the shared drive and has been ready since Thursday. I told her to send an email to the boss saying just that... because it is bullshit. That report wasn't there until 9 AM today.

I went home.

Simply don't cover your cow-orker's backside then your boss will be forced to deal with it.

Except that it sounds like part of the problem is that the manager hasn't been managing. Part of being a manager is training your people how to do their work, how to work with the team, holding people accountable etc. The boss is a big part of the problem here.

Having been one of the boss class I can see it, but that doesn't mean our friend has to take the rap for her incompetence or cow-orker's laziness.

Absolutely true. Just thinking that "the boss will have to deal with it" isn't likely to happen, since the boss hasn't yet.

what a PITA. and yes, your boss needs to do something about her. i'd hate to see you decide to need to walk because your back-up can't be trusted and your boss won't crack the whip, but honestly, if i were in your shoes i'd be applying internally at least.
