Last night I received an email with the supply list for next week's class. I was expecting a bring your own paints brushes and canvas... I thought that the point of the class was to share experiences to get you to paint every day. The artist instructor is about 30 and survived cancer as a young adult. I figured we would paint 6 x 6 and listen to her life experience...etc. I was not worried about making anything coherent. I wanted experience. I looked at her website and she has painted the same vase of flowers over 900 times. I figured I would paint fish or veggies.

Well I get the list and it is expansive. She asks for a dozen tunes of paint...Liquitex Heavy Body. I have Windsor Newton Pro paints... but none of the colors she wants. I also don't know if they are considered heavy body.

She is asking for 10 6x6 masonite boards, bring your own spot light with a specific type of halogen light bulb, view finders, and specific brushes.

We also need to bring items to set up as a still life.

This has now taken the class out of my comfortable price range and it is too late to cancel. I don't want to cancel... I want the experience... but ... it now makes me feel like I need tomato something out of this and not just a fun day in an artsy town.

Oh, wow. You'd think the supply list would be made available prior to sign up, so people know what is in store cost wise before committing. That sucks, have you contacted them and mentioned that the supplies they require are out of your price range, and ask if you can bring what you have available instead? They may be flexible.
I do find it BS that they weren't up front about the needed supplies before class sign-up, that's information people need to know so they can budget for it or choose another class accordingly.

I went and picked up some paint and will just bring what I have. Painting on masonite boards or canvas boards should not matter as the art is mine. I will gesso them this week and fill in with my own brushes and such.

I have to remember that I have been teaching crafts for 30 years and so I should be able to wing a few things as long as the person teaching is not an art snob.

That's crappy of her to not have given potential participants the supplies list ahead of time. That's a lot of money to lay out without a heads up!

I even looked on her website to see if supplies were listed there before I signed up..but nothing was listed.

The thing is thatmpst art stuff in Massachusetts is geared for well off retirees... or poor people from other countries .

That is an oddly specific list. Especially the colors!

I'd take what you're comfortable with, and not worry about it. It's not like you're being graded, you're taking a class for YOUR enjoyment, not hers.
